From the TRACE satellite, this
movie shows the evolution of the magnetic arcade that lit up after the big flare of
July 14, 2000. The exposures have been rescaled to the same peak intensity to
show the evolution of the central bright region. This causes the surroundings of
the flare site to apparently dim markedly as the flare reaches peak brightness. The
field of view is 230,000 by 170,000 km.
The VIS Earth Camera on Polar capured these images of
the auroral storm
that occurred over the United States on 22 October 1999.
This version is in a multicolored presentation to highlight the extreme
variability of the aurora. (831K GIF)
